Sunday, March 22nd is World Water Day, an annual United Nations Observance focusing on the importance of freshwater. Each year, this day aims to not only celebrate water, but raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water, and uniting people around the globe to help tackle the global water crisis. The theme this year is water and climate change, and how the two are intimately connected.
Even though most of us will be tucked away at home given our new normal – social distancing amidst the COVID-19 pause – there are still many ways you can create, support and further #ActionForWater initiatives! Here are a few creative ways you can celebrate:
Keep curious about water news
Dedicate some time to read up on the range of current water-related issues around the globe. We share all sorts of water stories on our Facebook Page daily, so if you aren’t already, give us a follow! We love to hear from our community through our social channels – let’s stay connected and keep updated on all things water.
Netflix and chill with us!
On Friday, March 27th at 7pm EST, we are co-hosting an amazing virtual event with Canoe for Clean Water – one of our awesome community partners. The event is called Community Couch which is a new virtual initiative to spark community engagement during these interesting times.
Netflix is premiering the incredible documentary There's Something in the Water, directed by Ellen Page and Ian Daniel, and this event calls for everyone to watch it – at home – together! During the at-home screening, Canoe for Clean Water will be live on their Facebook and Instagram accounts with questions, polls and prizes! And did we mention, this event is completely free? So, for the love of water, come join us! And don’t forget the popcorn!
Be mindful of at-home water use
We all need a little extra comfort these days, and that can come by a hot bath, a cup of tea, or a mindfulness mediation as we’re washing the dishes after dinner. While these are all positives, remain mindful of the amount of water you’re using while at home. It’s the time for simple pleasures, absolutely, but not excess.
Donate to a water justice charity!
Now’s a great time to send a small and meaningful donation to the organizations that you value most – and we hope we’re one of them!
Our annual film festival, originally scheduled for March 25-29th, has been postponed due to the global pandemic, and we’d really appreciate some additional support during these precarious times. We hope to keep our mission afloat, but need our community’s support in order to do so.
Find out more about the many ways we promote and ignite #ActionForWater year-round with our range of programs, initiatives and campaigns. We’re accepting donations of all denominations here, and truly appreciate every bit of our community’s support.
Keep well, and we’ll be in touch with film festival updates once they’re confirmed!
