Water Docs Film Festival and Cinéfest Sudbury
are taking a stand for climate action
with the launch of Toronto’s first Cinema Sit-in!
March 25 (Sudbury) and March 27 (Toronto)

What is Cinema Sit-in?

It's a grassroots, multi-location film screening meant to unite audiences in an urgent call for climate action! In its inaugural year, Cinema Sit-in will screen the Canadian Premiere of the feature documentary Little Yellow Boots.

Get your tickets today for Toronto's first Cinema Sit-in, and join a movement of concerned citizens for water and the planet! In fact, we’re so serious about water and climate action, that we've added an additional screening following Little Yellow Boots that you won't want to miss and, as an added bonus, if you decide to take advantage of the Activist Double Feature, you'll SAVE $5 on the second screening. Why? Because we know that knowledge is power! The more we know and the more we come together, the more we can do to fight the current climate crisis!

See you there!

Large scale community participation signals and makes a statement about the urgent need for climate action. The centrepiece of the experience will be a powerful documentary film that makes the need for this change abundantly clear, followed by a guided audience discussion about specific actions that can be taken personally and locally to reduce carbon emissions and protect water locally.

The screenings will kick off in Sudbury on Wednesday, March 25 at 7pm at SilverCity Sudbury Cinemas (355 Barrydowne Road, Sudbury, ON), followed by a screening at the Water Docs Film Festival in Toronto on Friday, March 27 at 6pm at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema (506 Bloor Street West).

“Water Docs’ mission is to stir and inspire people deeply through documentary film, and we’re excited to collaborate with Cinéfest to build on the remarkable work of “the young ones” led by Greta Thunberg, and move the dial on public opinion by hosting unique documentary experiences that inspire individual and collective community engagement and action to reduce carbon emissions and protect water locally,” said Stan Gibson, Executive Director, Ecologos Environmental Organization.

“Cinéfest Sudbury is thrilled to partner with Water Docs to present this important and engaging film and to encourage an avenue for individuals to share in discussions about how they can make a difference in today’s world,” said Tammy Frick, Executive Director, Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival.

At the centre of Cinema Sit-in are cinemas themselves – an ideal place to sit with like-minded individuals, families, and community organizations to share in storytelling while learning how to personally contribute to creating the best possible world for future generations.

About Little Yellow Boots (Canadian Premiere)

How can one help one’s grandchild, or great-grandchild, fifty years from now? What do we pass on to those who come after us, for both good and for bad? And what difference can one person make in the world? These are the universal questions that drive Little Yellow Boots, a cinematic letter to filmmaker John Webster’s great-grandchild, a girl who will be born in the 2060s, and whose little yellow boots will walk on a very different shoreline to the one we knew. Drawing from Webster’s personal experience of loss, viewers are taken on an emotional and physical journey from Finland across Russia to the coal mines of Siberia, to the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, and across the U.S. to New York. The story seamlessly weaves together past, present and future into a beautiful, moving, and hopeful documentary about the power of each of us to make a difference. Watch Trailer

About the Water Docs Film Festival

Dedicated to presenting independent, ground-breaking, water-themed documentaries, the Water Docs Film Festival is an annual exhibition that celebrates and promotes water protection and conservation. Water Docs provides a platform for vital discussions, and serves as a catalyst for change by providing opportunities to take action. Now in its ninth year, the festival delivers four diverse learning and action programs developed under the Water Docs Film Festival banner, including the innovative Water Docs @ School Action Projects, currently rolled out in dozens of Grade 7 & 8 classes across Ontario and Water Docs Where-You-Live Community Screenings. The Water Docs Film Festival is produced and presented by Ecologos, a charitable, volunteer-driven organization that engages thousands of people each year in programs that celebrate a sense of reverence for water, inform about the challenges that threaten clean water supplies, and inspire action in defence of nature’s most precious element.

About Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival

Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival was established in 1989 and despite some early skepticism, Sudburians quickly proved that a mining-oriented community could be receptive to repertory film culture, as cinema-buffs crowded theatres during the inaugural three-day event. Each year since, the Festival has continued to mature and expand, evolving into a full-service film organization which currently screens approximately 135 films, over a 9-day period. These films include: full-length features, shorts, documentaries and animations, showcasing each September. The upcoming edition of Cinéfest Sudbury is set for September 19-27, 2020.
